The Abandoned Power Plant
New Orleans is home to several large-scale abandoned facilities, most notably the Katrina-ravaged former Six Flags amusement park out east. Closer to downtown is the imposing, industrial Market Street Power Plant.
Built in 1905 and closed in 1973, it sits covered in graffiti next to more modern power generation systems. I’m too wary of trespassing laws here to attempt to get inside buildings like this, but just walking around the outside is impressive.
Plans to re-develop the plant have been on the table for years, but at the moment there are no concrete efforts to get working on it.
