Remnants

By and large, New Orleans has recovered from the incredible devastation of Hurricane Katrina — at least in its most commonly visited areas. There are neighborhoods in the east which still aren’t the same, but the French Quarter and Uptown look great, which is key for the tourism industry.

One reminder of the storm’s wrath near the city center is the old Lindy Boggs Medical Center in Mid-City. Untouched since 2005, the abandoned hospital campus is a major eyesore in an otherwise vibrant neighborhood.

It’s also a haven for urbex fans looking for abandoned scenery. I’d love to get inside — the fence around the building is down in multiple places — but I’m also wary of the fact that trespassing is a real offense in America.

For now, I’ll just stick with viewing the stark memorial to Katrina’s flooding from the outside.
